SUPPLIES NEEDED
CLASSROOM PROCEDURES
Please Note: I incorporate a lot of physical movement throughout class – please dress in a manner that is conducive to stretching, walking, stair climbing, yoga, etc.
BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS
Parents, I rarely have issues with student behavior, however at times we all make mistakes. I try my best to handle it directly with the student/students involved. If the behavior persists or affects the instruction flow of class, please expect the following:
Homework/Practice
Written work:
While I do not assign specific assignments on specific nights, there are “due by” expectations regarding written music theory. If students make good use of class time, they will not have to bring the assignment home. Students may ask for additional time or help during class for completion.
Practice:
While I do not assign specific measures and content on specific nights, there will be “due by” expectations regarding specific areas of their repertoire. If students make good use of class time, they will have less to work on at home. For practicing at home, students should use a piano/keyboard application on their Chrome Book or recordings on their cellular device.
Overall Grading percentages & Weighting:
Classwork/outside practice: 5%
Rehearsal and Formal Performances: 95%
Music theory/composition classwork – 1X (counts as one grade)
Music aesthetics/history classwork – 1X (counts as one grade)
Classroom rehearsal grades – 2X (counts as two grades)
Formal performance grades- 5X (counts as five grades)
Choir is a performing art.
Therefore, to fully experience Choir, all students must perform.
Our formal concerts are structure with audience enjoyment as well as student progress in mind. (They aren’t boring.)
PERFORMANCES:
FORMAL performances are the quarter summative assessments. These performances are carefully designed to allow the student to demonstrate mastery of newly learned vocal/choral technique and rehearsal/performance skills. There is a definite increase of difficulty over the year which is noted in these public performances. These performances are considered mandatory for all students. I try NOT to have additional dress rehearsals after school, however we might need a few here and there. You will be notified at least 2 weeks prior.
6th grade Formal attire: Boys – black dress pants, black dress shoes, black socks, black belt, long sleeve button down white dress shirt and a neck tie.
6th grade Formal attire: Girls- Black or mostly black dress which GOES PAST your knees. A skirt and blouse combination will work. If you need to wear pants- they should be loose fitting pants which appear more skirt like. They should not be form-fitting pants. Black dress shoes and appropriate hosiery.
If you have any questions about this attire, or need assistance with obtaining it, please email me.
Optional performances are those we hold in the community and at school such as the football games, winter caroling, etc. The great majority of these will require a choir T-shirt and nice jeans. Our t-shirt may be ordered the first few weeks of school. You must have a choir t-shirt or you will not be able to go off campus with the choir or perform at school if that is the dress code for the performance.
